Holiday Plumbing Tips

This holiday season you’ll be gathering with friends and family at various gatherings and parties to share in the spirit of the season. But with the rise in large groups of people celebrating together in one place, this is also a time of year when there is added pressure on your plumbing system and, as a result, emergency plumbing problems will arise more often.

What you don’t want interrupting your merry celebration is a clogged sink, broken garbage disposal or a backed-up toilet. But with all the extra food preparation and guests in your home, these things can happen. So with that in mind, here are some ways you can avoid a plumbing emergency this holiday season.

When preparing a large meal for guests it’s tempting to save time and pour the excess grease down your drain and forget about it. This can be a big mistake, as once that grease gets into your pipes and cools it will start to solidify and clog your drain. It can also cause damage to your garbage disposal, so your best bet is to dispose of grease properly every time.

Speaking of your garbage disposal, you’ll want to make sure you’re not putting items in it that can cause problems. Your disposal should only be used for small particles that it’s built to handle and not larger scraps of food that would be better suited for the trash can. Items like meat, egg shells, coffee grounds, pasta, rice, carrots, celery, fruit peels and animal bones should never be put in your garbage disposal.

Last but not least, your toilets are another place clogs can surface. The most common cause of toilet clogs isn’t from overeating at the dinner table, but from flushing items that weren’t designed to be flushed through your plumbing system. These items include: paper towels, tissues, cotton balls and swabs, feminine products and so-called “flushable” wipes. The best way to keep these items from clogging your toilet over the holidays is to keep a waste basket close by in your bathroom.
